First day in DC

Well.... Sue and Abigail and I had a busy day yesterday. I went to see a New York Senator's office and then the three of us went to Diane Feinstein's office. It was a decidedly cool (meaning not warm) meeting but we learned a lot about our possible opponents. We are hoping that today goes a lot better at Boxer and Pelosi's offices. Many of the other midwives had very positive meetings, especially Ida Daragh from Arkansas who actually was invited to meet her Congresssman. He seems very supportive. But we are working hard and will keep you updated. Don't forget to follow me on Twitter if you do that kind of thing!

Follow me on Twitter!
Do you think I even know how to do that? Well, I signed up and we are going to try so that you can follow us around Washington DC! I am currently in the air, gotta love inflight internet! But I am exhausted because it is 1:30am. Sue and Abigail are happily sleeping so that we look our best at the capitol. Sign up to Twitter and we'll keep in touch!

Leaving in 4 hours

Obama's three health care reform principles include: reducing costs, guaranteeing choice, and providing quality, affordable health care. He is committed to passing reform bills that will guarantee these three principles. As we all know, midwifery is capable of providing all of these things.
CPMs have been working tirelessly for the last 15 years: creating the CPM credential, accrediting our schools, jumping through all the necessary hoops to be legitimate on a national level. Now we are here and ready to join the bigger system. Please support the MAMA campaign by reading the website, MAMA Campaign, helping us to raise the necessary funds to support our staff, and mobilizing our consumer base when the time is right. We can use constituents in Washington DC as well as in our districts to meet with Health Aides to introduce who we are and how we can help improve maternity care in this country. Ask your local midwifery or doula organization to endorse the campaign. By becoming an endorser, your organization will agree to raise $1000 by September 1, 2009 for the MAMA Campaign. You can sign up to be an endorser on the website. We will list you as an endorser and as our coalition grows, so will our hope to recognize CPMs on the federal level. We can do it!!

Welcome Seth, Jr.!
Maria, Sue and Abigail are going to DC!
That's right, we are travelling to DC tomorrow night for a "fly-in" with 20 other midwives from around the country. Abigail, Sue and I will go to Boxer and Feinstein's office to meet with key Senate staffers about how Certified Professional Midwives can be an important solution to the difficulties with American maternity care. Obama's three health care reform principles include: reducing costs, guaranteeing options and providing affordable, quality care to all Americans. We believe that midwifery can do all three! Wish us luck! I'll be blogging from DC!

Midwifery and HCR Part 1
On June 6th, 2009, I held a Health Care Reform Kick-off event in my living room. Thousands of others around the country held events in their homes, churches, schools and cafes in order to rally around health care reform. My event was about Midwifery and Health Care Reform (HCR). Everyone is invited to create a local day of service on June 27th for HCR. Please highlight how midwifery can be a valuable addition to any community. For more information, please visit and sign up at my.barackobama.com. Come join this national movement and the MAMA campaign. See the video by clicking the link below. I will post Part 2 tomorrow.

Midwifery and Health Care Reform
Hey Loyal Followers! I am committing myself to blogging every day about the M.A.M.A. campaign. That is, Midwives and Mothers in Action! Things are speeding up in Congress as we expected and we are trying to get Certified Professional Midwives included in the upcoming Health Care Reform (HCR) bills. It is very exciting and full of potential to increase access to midwifery services for mothers and babies.Check out our website at the link below or click the CPM button to the right:
